I frequently see posts (or hear directly) from women who are contemplating divorcing their husbands.

They often have fear about the prospect--especially as it pertains to their ability to continue to mother their children in the way they most dearly desire to. Many of these women are not financially equal to their husbands and would be severely limited in providing for themselves and their children if they jumped out of the boat right away.

They are rightfully nervous--they are incredibly vulnerable in their current state. They are also susceptible to the influence of everyone else's opinions about what they "should" do.

In addition to their fears for the future, many of these women have already been privately facing the emotional anguish of infidelity, the threat or pain of physical violence, the confusion of emotional or psychological abuse, or the slow, painful erosion of love and care.

They believe that divorce will fix their problems.

While it may fix some—and those problems ALL deserve to be addressed—divorce is one of the most stressful events a person can face. (According to the 'Holmes and Rahe stress scale', divorce is the second most stressful life event after death of a spouse. Marital separation is third.) The stress alone will create a whole new slew of issues to face.
